The 42nd Indonesia Forum Symposium for Postgraduate & Early Career Researcher
The Indonesia Forum (IF) held its 42nd Indonesia Postgraduate & Early Career Researcher symposium in November 22-23rd 2023. The symposium is a continuation of the University of Melbourne’s commitment to engagement with and building excellence in scholarship on Indonesia. The IF has built a strong sense of community and collaboration among researchers on and from Indonesia through events promoting. This year marked the 25-year anniversary since Indonesia’s Reformation era began (1998) with the theme ‘Reformasi 25 years on: Opportunities and challenges for Indonesian society’
The hybrid symposium (online & in-person) was held at the University of Melbourne Parkville Campus, Victoria Australia (Arts West Building, Room 253).

The symposium included a roundtable session at the start of Day 2 Panel 1 (10am-11.30am) on “Building relationship: Government, Industry and Academia”. Discussion was led by the Chair Associate Professor Rachel Diprose with expert guest speakers from University of Indonesia (ARC UI) Dr Inaya Rakhmani and Dr Diatyka W.P. Yasih, and Universitas Gadjah Mada (PolGov UGM) Dr Amalinda Savirani, with opening remarks by the Director of the University of Melbourne’s Asia Institute Prof Vedi Hadiz.

A book launch was held at the end of Day 1: 5.45pm-6.45pm of Prof Kate McGregor’s ‘Systemic Silencing’ book was launched by Dr Ken Setiawan (Arts West Room 253) who also chaired the Indonesian Studies Arief Budiman Third Annual Lecture at the end of Day 2: 6pm by Associate Professor Dirk Tomsa at the William Mcmahon Ball Theatre in Old Arts building.
Call for papers that ‘speak’ to the theme of ‘Reformasi 25 years on’ closed on the 4th of September 2023. Thank you for the overwhelming interest. We were only able to accommodate 28 selected papers out of a submission of 70 abstracts. Selected presenters received their acceptance response by email. A full program was sent to presenters, chairs and the public who registered to attend either in person or via zoom.

Our Indonesian partner institution includes the Asia Research Centre (ARC) at the University of Indonesia and Research Centre for Politics and Governance (PolGov) at Universitas Gadjah Mada.
