Book Launch: Prof Kate McGregor’s book ‘Systemic Silencing’

Professor Kate McGregor’s book Systemic Silencing: Activism, Memory, and Sexual Violence in Indonesia (UW Press, 2023), is an outcome of her ARC Future Fellowship. It offers an in-depth empirical history of the system of enforced military prostitution during the Japanese occupation of the Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia) and the complicated development of transnational activism to achieve recognition and compensation for survivors. This book is the first major study of Indonesian transnational human rights activism and the Indonesian so-called ‘comfort women’.

Her book was launched by Dr Ken Setiawan, Senior Lecturer in Indonesian Studies, The University of Melbourne. Copies of the signed book was on sale for a discounted price of $80 AUD at the event.
